Lighting
Conserving energy saves both money and resources, providing multiple benefits to any consumer. Common energy saving lighting products include compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), fluorescent tubes, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). These lighting options can use up to 66% less energy then traditional incandescent light bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer, saving you money in disposal costs as well. And though all three lighting options save energy, LEDs are even more efficient. To save the most energy and extend product life, remember to turn off lights when not in use, or use timers or sensors where possible.
While many of us already are aware of the benefits of CFLs and fluorescent tubes in comparison to traditional incandescent light bulbs, it is important to remember that these materials do contain mercury and need to be properly disposed of. Tompkins County residents and businesses can bring their CFLs and fluorescent tubes to the Recycling and Solid Waste Center (RSWC) for recycling.
